Shri Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram in English

Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram is a famous and sacred stotra of Hinduism, which describes the divine names of Lord Vishnu. It was given to Yudhisthira by his grandfather Bhishma in the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. By listening to it, reading it and chanting it, one gets mental peace, positive energy and happiness and prosperity in life.

Every name of Lord Vishnu in Vishnu Sahasranama has a special meaning and significance, as he is called Anant, Achyutha, Govinda and Madhusoodana. This stotra is not only a symbol of devotion, but also a powerful medium of yoga and meditation. By reciting it daily, sins are destroyed and salvation is attained. This hymn is simple and powerful for people of all ages.

॥ Purvapeethika ॥

Lord Viṣṇu is dressed in white and has four arms, the color of the moon.
One should meditate on the cheerful face of the Lord to remove all obstacles. 1 ॥

O incorruptible, pure, eternal, Supreme Soul,
O Lord Viṣṇu, You are always in one form and form, and You conquer all. 5 ॥

By merely remembering Him, one is freed from the bondage of birth and death.
I offer my respectful obeisances unto that all-pervading Lord Viṣṇu. 6 ॥

Śrī Vaiśampāyana said:
Hearing the religious principles in their entirety and purifying them in every way
Yudhisthira addressed Śāntanava again 7 ॥

Yudhisthira said.
Is there any one deity in this world, or is there any one ultimate refuge?
Whom do human beings attain by praising and worshiping? 8 ॥

What religion do you consider to be the highest of all religions?
By chanting this mantra, a living being is freed from the bondage of birth and material existence. 9 ॥

Sri Bhishma said.
He is the Lord of the universe, the God of the gods, the infinite Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Praising the Lord with a thousand names, the man always rose up. 10 ॥

They constantly worshiped that inexhaustible Supreme Personality of Godhead with devotion.
One should meditate on Him, praise Him, offer obeisances to Him and perform sacrifices to Him. 11 ॥

He is the eternally immortal Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Lord of all the worlds.
One who constantly praises the Lord of the universe will be free from all suffering. 12 ॥

He was a brāhmaṇa and knew all religious principles and increased the fame of the worlds.
He is the master of the universe and is the greatest of all beings. 13 ॥

I consider this to be the greatest of all religious practices.
Anyone who worships the lotus-eyed Lord with devotion should always chant His hymns. 14 ॥

He is the supreme effulgence and the supreme austerity.
The Supreme Absolute Truth is the Supreme Absolute Truth. 15 ॥

He is the most holy of the holy and the most auspicious of the auspicious.
He is the deity of the demigods and the inexhaustible father of all living beings. 16 ॥

Because all living beings are created in the beginning of the universe.

Sri Bhishma said.
This is the story of the great soul Keśava, who is worthy of praise.
I have described to you in full a thousand divine names. 1 ॥

That human being will not experience anything inauspicious in this life or in the next 2 ॥

A brāhmaṇa who follows the Vedanta is a kṣatriya who is victorious
A vaisya will be rich in wealth and a śūdra will enjoy happiness 3 ॥

He who seeks religion obtains religion, and he who seeks wealth obtains wealth.
A lustful man obtains his desires and one who seeks progeny obtains them 4 ॥

A devotee who always gets up and is pure and whose mind is absorbed in Him
One should chant the thousand names of Lord Vāsudeva. 5 ॥

He attains abundant fame and prominence
He attains unshakable opulence and attains the supreme good fortune. 6 ॥

He never experiences fear, he attains strength and brilliance.
He becomes healthy, radiant, strong, beautiful and endowed with virtues. 7 ॥

One who is sick is freed from disease, and one who is bound is freed from bondage.
One is freed from fear, but one who is afraid is freed from calamity. 8 ॥

A man quickly crosses the difficult paths to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
He always praised the Lord with a thousand names and was filled with devotion. 9 ॥

A mortal who takes shelter of Vāsudeva is devoted to Vāsudeva.
One who is purified of all sins attains the eternal Absolute Truth. 10॥

The sky, the moon, the sun, the stars, the sky, the directions, the earth and the ocean.
These were carried by the mighty power of Lord Vāsudeva. 14 ॥

He saw the demigods, demons, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, serpents and Rākṣasas.
All moving and nonmoving beings are under the control of Lord Kṛṣṇa. 15 ॥

The senses are the mind, intelligence, goodness, fire, strength and patience.
They say that the field and the knower of the field are all elements of Vāsudeva. 16 ॥

The practice of all the Vedas was first conceived.
The source of morality is religion, and the infallible Lord is the master of religion. 17 ॥

The sages, the forefathers, the demigods, the great beings and the elements.
This universe, whether moving or not, is created by Lord Nārāyaṇa. 18 ॥

Yoga, knowledge, Sāṅkhya, knowledge, crafts and other activities
The Vedas, the scriptures and all this knowledge are from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Janārdana. 19 ॥

The one Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Viṣṇu, is manifest in many different forms.
The inexhaustible Supreme Soul, the enjoyer of the universe, pervades the three worlds. 20 ॥

This hymn was composed by Vyāsadeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Anyone who wishes to attain good fortune and happiness by reading this mantra 21 ॥

He is the unborn Lord of the universe and the inexhaustible Lord of the universe.
Those who worship Lord Puṣkarakṣa are never defeated. 22 ॥

They do not go to defeat others by saying ‘Om Namah’

Arjuna said.
O best of the demigods, you have large eyes like lotus petals and a lotus-navel.
O Janārdana, please be the protector of Your devotees, who are always attached to You. 23 ॥

Sri Bhagavan said.
O son of Pāṇḍava, whoever wishes to praise Me with a thousand names
That I am undoubtedly praised by one verse. 24 ॥

There is no doubt that he is praised, Om Namah.

Vyasa said.
By your desire for Lord Vāsudeva, the three worlds have become fragrant.
O Lord Vāsudeva, You are the abode of all living entities. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You. 25 ॥

Śrī Vāsudeva, I offer my obeisances to you.

Parvati said.
By some means, in a simple way, one can chant the thousand names of Lord Viṣṇu.
It is read daily by learned men, and I wish to hear it, my lord. 26 ॥

God said.
Śrī Rāma, Rāma, Rāma, Rāma, Rāma, delightful.
O beautiful one the name of Rama is equal to a thousand names 27 ॥

Brahma said.
Obeisance to the Infinite, the Thousand-Image
He has a thousand feet, eyes, head, thighs and arms.
To the eternal man of a thousand names
ॐ Sahasrakotiyugadharine namaḥ ॥ 28 ॥

Oṁ namaḥ to the holder of thousands of millions of ages.

Sri Bhishma said.
This is the story of the great soul Keśava, who is worthy of praise.
I have described to you in full a thousand divine names. 1 ॥

Anyone who hears this Vedic mantra daily and chants it
That human being will not experience anything inauspicious in this life or in the next 2 ॥

A brāhmaṇa who follows the Vedanta is a kṣatriya who is victorious
A vaisya will be rich in wealth and a śūdra will enjoy happiness 3 ॥

He who seeks religion obtains religion, and he who seeks wealth obtains wealth.
A lustful man obtains his desires and one who seeks progeny obtains them 4 ॥

A devotee who always gets up and is pure and whose mind is absorbed in Him
One should chant the thousand names of Lord Vāsudeva. 5 ॥

He attains abundant fame and prominence
He attains unshakable opulence and attains supreme good fortune. 6 ॥

He never experiences fear, he attains strength and brilliance.
He becomes healthy, radiant, strong, beautiful and endowed with virtues. 7 ॥

One who is sick is freed from disease, and one who is bound is freed from bondage.
One is free from fear, but one who is afraid is free from calamity. 8 ॥

A man quickly crosses the difficult paths to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
He always praised the Lord with a thousand names and was filled with devotion. 9 ॥

A mortal who takes shelter of Vāsudeva is devoted to Vāsudeva.
One who is purified of all sins attains the eternal Absolute Truth. 10 ॥

Sanjaya said.
Where is Lord Kṛṣṇa, the master of yoga, and where is Arjuna, the bow-bearer?
My consciousness is always opulence, victory, happiness and morality. 29 ॥

Those who worship Me, thinking of Me as unique.
For those who are ever engaged in My service, I carry the safety of Mystic power. 30 ॥

It is for the salvation of the righteous and the destruction of the wicked.
I appear in every age to establish religious principles. 31 ॥

They were distressed depressed relaxed and frightened
They are also suffering from terrible diseases.
By chanting only the word Narayana
They are freed from suffering and are happy. 32 ॥

O Lord Nārāyaṇa, please forgive all of us. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.

by body, speech, mind or senses
or by the intellect and the self, because of the nature of nature.
I do whatever I can for the other
